Carlsberg Cup
The Taça da Liga (English: League Cup), officially known as the Carlsberg Cup is competition organized by the Portuguese League for Professional Football started in the 2007/08 football season. It was proposed by Sporting Clube de Portugal and Boavista F.C. in 2006 and unanimously approved by all clubs from the Portuguese professional leagues in a meeting in Porto on 28 November 2006. All teams of the two levels of professional football, Portuguese Liga and Liga de Honra, participate in this competition. The first winner and current holder is Vitória de Setúbal who defeated Sporting Clube de Portugal 3-2 on penalties.
Format
The first round consist of single elimination rounds where the eight last seeded teams from last season "Liga de Honra" (the two promoted teams included) face the top eight(the two demoted teams included) Last seeded always plays at home. In the second round, the eight winning teams face the eight worst seeded Portuguese Liga teams of the previous year (except the two relegated teams) plus the two teams that had earned promotion to the Portuguese Liga, the teams that came from last round play at home. By the third round, the remaining clubs plus the first placed teams of the previous year face each other on single elimination round, the teams that came from last round play at home. Following that, a fourth round is played in two legs. The four remaining teams play each other in a single round-robin group stage. The top two teams face each other in the final. Desde a época 2007/08 começou a jogar-se em Portugal para uma nova competição, a Carlsberg Cup, terceira prova profissional organizada pela Liga.
A Carlsberg Cup é disputada por todos os clubes inscritos na Liga, em sistema de eliminatórias e termina com uma final, no Sábado de Páscoa.
A Carlsberg, patrocinadora de eventos desportivos reconhecida mundialmente, associou o seu nome à competição até ao final da época 2009/10.
O troféu da Carlsberg Cup
O desenho é inspirado em dois motivos centrais.
Um é o copo tradicional da Carlsberg, com uma configuração muito própria. O outro motivo que inspirou o troféu é o edifício “Torso Retorcido” criado na Suécia pelo arquitecto Santiago Calatrava, autor da Estação do Oriente, Lisboa. Fonte - www.lpfp.pt
